DRAPER, UT — Despite what colleagues and members of the Thursday night group ride will think, a 42-year-old Draper dentist has vowed to ride his 2019 mountain bike for one more season.
“I’m not upgrading my Audi Q8 until late 2020, and I want my bike and car to be the same model year,” said Spencer Trevor, owner of Really White Dentistry. “It’s not a great bike. It was only $8200.00 before upgrades, but I’m willing to sacrifice by toiling away on it another year.”
Members of his Thursday night group ride were shocked and saddened by the news, saying Trevor’s Strava times are sure to dip as the components age.
“Apparently, K.O.M.s (King of the Mountain) aren’t all that important to Spencer,” said fellow dentist Hunter Bedford. “You can always just buy a new bike and a new Audi. I’m not sure where his head is right now.”
Trevor’s current bike, a highly coveted 2019 Yeti SB130 X01 Race, has been called “spectacular” and “like a Cheetah” in reviews, but Trevor remains at best indifferent to the bike, which he now refers to as “that old thing.” He also insists that the 2021 model will shave a few grams, which should help him catch up to Eric, who he said “placed at Sea Otter last year.”
However, he plans to wait to purchase a new bike, a bold move for a dentist.
Bicycle industry research shows that dentists are the group of people most likely to buy a high-dollar bike at the beginning of each season. In particular, they are fond of carbon 29-inch trail bikes, according to the most recent data.
“Waiting was a tough decision,” said Trevor. “I know I’ll be missing out on some great Strava times without the upgrade, but I can take comfort in the fact that I’m buying a new pair of DPS Lotus Alchemist skis.”
While the Thursday night group now has a leg up on Trevor, he says he’ll be unstoppable during his five visits to Alta.
